Cape Cod Sunset by Julia Cumes, Photographer
Captivating Innovation on the Cape 2023
September 18 through 22, 2023
in South Yarmouth, Massachusetts
ISEA has a wonderful, fun-filled symposium planned for art inspiration, friendship, and educational enjoyment.
Hope you can join us!
MORNING WELLNESS SESSIONS – 8:30 to 9:30 AM MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY COST $25.00 per day
Yoga with Lees Yunits
If moderate strength building, flexibility, and peace of mind are of interest to you, join this Yoga class. There will be one-hour sessions every morning during this week. Included will be several styles of breath work, a variety of yoga postures and styles (Hatha, Yin, Somatic, Kundalini), and time for reflection/meditation. Don't forget your mat, preferable block, and small blanket!
Meditation with Pete Cormier
Each day will have a new focus in mindfulness and meditation. You’ll explore different aspects of mindfulness as follows:
Monday: Why the Breath?
Tuesday: Our Restless Mind
Wednesday: The Body Knows
Thursday: Mindful Daily Life
Friday: Mindful Self Care
Each session is designed to stand alone, so you should feel free to take sessions that would be most helpful to you.
Drumming with 'Adja' (aka Sue Landers)
Explore your internal rhythms and play with the different sounds a djembe drum makes, and learn a rhythm from West Africa. Drumming relieves stress and provides an opportunity to creatively express the rhythm within. It is a great way to connect to yourself and others.
Gentle Stretching with Dianne Voikos
Body awareness is the key focus of this class. Each class will begin with centering and breath awareness followed by a flow of gentle stretches. Everyone is unique in their ability to stretch. Bring a yoga mat, yoga block, and stretching strap.
Visual Journaling with Debra Shaffer, ISEA (Mon, Tues, Wed only)
Experiment, connect, and emerge through three days of visual journaling. Sometimes we just need permission to play, and to become aware of and follow our own stream of consciousness, rather than to orchestrate a potential end result! In this way creative ideas may emerge and develop naturally. This approach can lead to surprises and "aha" moments. Join us for an exciting way to approach Visual Journaling in your own art practice.
Surface Design & Handbuilding with Clay with Holly Heaslip – (Mon only)
Have you always wondered how to create multi-purpose dishes and tiles from clay and then decorate them using the techniques of sgraffito, sponging, spattering, stenciling, and stamping? Then this is the perfect workshop for you. These are all fun and simple surface design techniques. Materials will be provided for you. Join us!
Experimental Mark-Making – Drawing and Brushwork with Ann Guiliani - (Mon only)
Each of us has our own unique mark-making ability. NO JUDGEMENTS HERE. Through demonstration and exploration with many kinds of media you will try a series of experiments that will help define your individual mark as unique. Sounds like fun?
Woodturning with Dave Aarnone and Wood Burning with Ellen Adamson (Mon, Tues, Wed only)
Learn to create turned objects on a wood lathe in the morning and further enhance them with wood burning features in the afternoon. One, two, or three days of continued fun this hands-on activity will provide participants the opportunity to complete up to three turned projects. All materials and tools will be provided.
Cold Wax Painting with Elaine Tata (Mon and Wed only)
Ever wonder how a Cold Wax piece is developed? Here’s your chance to learn. Composed of mainly beeswax, with a small amount of solvent to soften it, cold wax has a soft, paste-like consistency, (like frosting) at room temperature and dries to a matte surface. You will understand how and why you might want to incorporate Cold Wax into your artistic practice.
Assemblage Workshop with Hugo Rizzoli (Tues only)
You will be encouraged to try new approaches, share your ideas and discoveries with each other, swap materials and offer insights on the creative assemblage process. We will prepare a substrate (support) for our chosen elements, explore adhesives and other methods of attachment and finally, stand back to consider the effects of color and composition. This adventure awaits you!
Mixed Media & Collage - Paint, cut, paste with Kendra Postma, ISEA-MF (Tues and Wed only)
Like solving puzzles? You will love this workshop! Create a collage/mixed media piece (Day 1) and turn it into a 3-D piece (Day 2). You will learn everything you need to know about collage and then some!
Plein Aire Painting with Susan Overstreet (Wed only)
Enjoy the Sculpture Garden and patio space at the center, spending the day outside painting with one of the local artists in the lead. This is a great way to improve your observational skills while enjoying a beautiful day in this enchanting area on the East Coast.
EXTRA LATE DAY AND EVENING EVENTS:
Painting (or Drawing) the Live Figure with Susan Overstreet (Wed. evening 6 to 8pm Cost $70)
Interested in drawing the human figure? Here is your chance. The human figure is challenging, but the practice of life drawing and painting provides a clear path for further learning and knowledge. The desire to express what we see in the human form better inspires us to keep going.
Cooking Class in our Simoneau Kitchen with Joe Cizynski (Wed. evening 6 to 8 pm $70 pp)
Hungry and want to learn how to create unique food? We will prepare foods from Bocelli’s hometown. Start with rabbit pate with pistachios, roast Guinea hen with pancetta, rosemary and orange, and finish with Tuscan cheeses. Red and white wine from Tuscany also will be poured.
Photo Tour with Julia Cumes (Thurs 4:30 to 7:00 pm Cost $80)
Grab your camera (or phone) to take a photographic tour of some of Cape Cod's unique and beautiful locations with well-known local photographer, Julie Cumes.
